May Election Meeting Recap

Larry Mastin gave an amazing presentation about the eruption of the Tonga volcano on the 43rd anniversary of the Mt. St. Helens eruption on May 18th. If you couldn’t make it, we’ve uploaded his presentation here:

OREGON AMS ELECTION FINAL RESULTS… With a record-setting 77 votes cast (51.2% return rate) we saw our most challenging election of all-time, which included a rare “tie” for the third / final councilor position. The officer positions on the council were all re-elected, unopposed. However, we had 6 folks running for 3 open councilor positions. Sara (Timm) Miller landed 59 votes and snags the first councilor slot. Tyler Mode snagged the second councilor slot with 46 votes. Tyler has been re-elected after a few years off of the EC.

The third and final councilor slot was a tie between John Rinier and Jenni Hastings with 44 votes each. John Rinier offered to give the position to Jenni Hastings for the entire term. That was nice of John. Congrats to Jenni as well! Dave Lamb and Mike Krejci put up a good fight, but votes totals were lower for both candidates.

Saying Goodbye… After 23 years on the executive council (nearly a quarter of a century) Tyree Wilde is heading off into retirement. He has earned it! Tyree was a consummate professional, level headed and calm even in the face of those contentious global warming meetings back in 2011/2012. Pete Parsons is also taking a step back and may pop up again at some point in the future. Both Tyree and Pete are still active members and will attend meetings.

Next Up… Relax, enjoy your summer… then Saturday, September 30th is our season kick-off meeting at OMSI. The National Weather Service and Dr. Cliff Mass will take a technical look at the record-setting (yes, it was) Portland snowstorm on February 22nd 2023. Then Saturday, October 28th the 31st annual Winter Weather Forecast Conference returns to OMSI. Both meetings are set for 10AM start times.

I have an interesting plot of the Tonga event that I recorded on my weather station’ s barometer. I captured the air pressure change on Bainbridge Island from the time it arrived from the west to the time it encircled the globe and arrived from the east.
If there is any interest , I would be happy to send the data to you.
