April Oregon AMS Meeting Details
What: GOES 17 Tech Talk
When: Tuesday, April 23rd 2019 (6pm-7pm social hour) 7pm Meeting!
Where: Stark Street Pizza – 9234 S.E. Stark Street in Portland. One block west of I-205 @ Stark
Driving Directions: https://tinyurl.com/y7yvm6co
Agenda: Portland National Weather Service Meteorologist Will Ahue will give a detailed technical look at the new GOES-17 satellite. GOES-17 was launched in March 2018 and has been moved to it’s permanent location at 137.2 W and will become GOES West. GOES 15 (old GOES W) is at 128.0 W and will operate in tandem with GOES 17 for six months to allow assessment of the performance of GOES 17, which will become the new GOES W operational satellite. The new series of GOES satellite is a tremendous increase in the ability to detect and observe weather phenomena. The new Advanced Baseline Imagery (ABI) on GOES-17 is far superior to previous imagers in terms of spectral resolution (16 bands vs 5 bands on current GOES) and temporal resolution (1 min to 5 min data). GOES-17 also has a geostationary lightning mapper that measures cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning. There is lots to learn.
We will also provide a quick update on the annual Oregon AMS election. Save the date on your calendar and come hungry!
